The History of First Baptist Church of Graham

On Saturday, June 20, 1874, eight members of the Baptist faith "living in or near the town of Graham" met in the Alamance County Court House with the Reverend W. T. Farrow, missionary for the Mount Zion Association, to organize a Baptist church. Seven of these dedicated Christians became charter members of the church..

The articles of faith and covenant were adopted, and the church was officially organized and named "The Graham Baptist Church" which was not changed in name until October 11, 1942 to First Baptist Church of Graham. The Reverend Farrow was called as pastor "to preach twice a month, the morning of the 3rd Sabbath and in the afternoon of the 1st Sabbath".

In 1877 the church constructed its first house of worship on a 1 2/3 acre lot on North Main Street known as Wyatt Outlaw lot. Prior to the erection of the church, the small congregation met for worship and conferences in "the free school house", Good Templar's Hall, and homes of members. Rolls at meetings were called and members accounted for their absences from worship services. The early church records indicate frequent dismissals prompted by disorderly conduct or other behavior unbecoming a church member.

In September, 1874 the Mount Zion Association accepted the church for which it had agreed in July to pay the pastor's salary of $500.00 for one-half time a year "out of funds appropriated - for the support of destitute places".

The following year on March 21, the church received Robert A. Noell, its first member by baptism, which was delayed numerous times because of the illness of the convert.

The dream of the small congregation was finally realized on August 18, 1877, when the twenty-two members met in its first house of worship, a wooden frame thirty by fifty foot structure erected by funds assessed and subscribed by members and heavily mortgaged for "$335.00 on the first and the second one for $200.00 held by Ellis King, Esq.". The Reverend T. H. Pritchard preached the dedication sermon.

Through the years the growth of this church in membership, facilities, and services has greatly been influenced by the spiritual and social needs of the community and the Christian commitment to meet these needs.

The original house of worship was modified through the years and was finally replaced on the same site by the present Colonial brick sanctuary, educational building, and chapel begun in late 1949 and completed in 1959.

Twenty-two pastors have led the congregation during the past 125 years. To meet growing needs, additional staff members on a part and full time basis have been added

In recent years the ministries of First Baptist have expanded to include youth and children's programs, a senior adult program, and various mission and benevolent projects.  First Baptist has also helped in starting new church work in the North Graham area in 1966.  In 1974 the North Graham Baptist Church was formed and began its work as a sister congregation in this community.  At present, the church is also sponsoring a Laotian language mission.
